ASDL? Yes, this is a form of DSL that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines than conventional modem can provide. ASDL actually stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. Seems like a long name for a form of DSL. ADSL uses two separate bands one up and one down. The up one is from the user to the central office where the other one is down and it sends from the central office to the user. ASDL does have many disadvantages though. Let’s look over some of them.
One big disadvantage is that the signal from ADSL cannot travel very far over normal telephone cables. This makes ASDL only good for very short distances. Once the signal is through it is switch into the network. Looking over this and you can see where the problems could be really big. Losing the signal can be very crucial for a number of reasons. If you place an emergency call and since it travels over a very short distance the call could be distorted or even lost. This wouldn’t be a system that I would like very much. Filters are used often with ADSL as the signal can be interfered with really easy. Losing the signal isn’t a good thing so filters must be used at all times. ASDL is affected by many things include am radio stations and other things with high power frequencies. ASDL does have some advantage though and one is it does send data a lot faster than normal DSL which is really important if you ask me. Looking at the big picture here I don’t see ADSL being something that a lot of people will want to use. Having to use an ADSL filter all the time and not sure if you will protect your signal all the time is something that worries me. ADSL is good for some applications, but for the money a cable connection should be your connection of choice if you ask me. You don’t want to lose and important data transfer so I would be a little scared to use ADSL. Hopefully this better explains ADSL and how it works and if it’s for what you need. If you need data transfer over short lines and have no interference problem than this could be something you may want to look into.
